Student Members

Desert Skye welcomes new students into the band with open arms.  Below are a few of our students that are transisitoning from the practice chanter to the bagpipes and working on becoming active band members.  If you are interested in learing the pipes or drums, click here for more information.

  • Mike Gilbert: Piper, Retired Air Force

Mike GilbertI took the plunge and started to learn to play the pipes in 2000.  Since then they have travelled with me on various deployments around the world.  One of my favorite moments was piping the sun down while standing on top of Saddam's palace in Baghdad.  I never would have guessed that playing bagpipes would open the door to so many different opportunities. It has been great to join in with the Desert Skye band and I look forward to improving through their consistent coaching and encouragement.

  • Paul Bigham: Piper, Police Officer

Paul BighamPaul started taking bagpipe lesson in May of 2011, from Desert Skye band member Van Frazier. He is 51 years old and a 26 year veteran Police Officer for the local Police Department.  He says "You are never too old to learn, just ask Van!"

  • Evelyn Hamilton: Piper, Senior Financial Analyst

EvelynEvelyn started piping in 2000-2003, gave it up, then started up again in 2011 as a student of Van Frazier.  She is currently a Senior Financial Analyst.  She was born at home, on a farm in Vernonia, OR.  She moved to Colorado when she was ten and started piping in my early twenties. She likes to play music because she feels joy when she plays something that sounds beautiful. Why she picked bagpipes, none of us will ever know.
When asked why bagpipes, she said "I have red hair.  It just made sense".  She can be seen in her picture trying to squeeze a cat as a way to get used to the bagpipe sound.
  • Brandon & Jessica Fowles & their son Shawn

Brandon and Jessica started taking lessons back in the summer of 2010 after going to the Highland Games in April.  Both have started on pipes in 2011 and are working on learning lots of tunes to play with the band.  Jessica's goal seems to be to make her instructor as crazy as possible and succeeds regularly.  Just recently, their son Shawn, who is 7 years old, started working on the practice chanter and has learned the scale and how to read notes.  One month in and he can already pipe circles around his parents.
